Meet the Careers Advisor Senior School
Meet - Janette Clarkson, Careers Adviser, Hamilton College
A fully qualified Careers Adviser with over 25 years’ experience, working with school pupils, students and adults in a variety of settings, I have established links and networks within education and industry, and an extensive knowledge of Further/Higher Education, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships.
My role within the school is to support pupils, parents and teachers with a comprehensive range of careers information, advice and guidance, using a wide range of resources, to enable young people make informed and confident decisions about their post school options.
I offer an impartial, independent and person-centred approach to each individual pupil to ensure they reach their full potential with the following activities -
- Introduction to My World of Work – an interactive media and all age service to help build career management and planning skills, to discover what careers match skills, interests, education and experience. Pupils learn to explore their interests and strengths using the online tools, find out which subjects are needed and are useful for different careers, research courses, jobs and gain valuable advice on application and interview techniques.
- Careers Fayre – Available for S2/S4 transition phase in subject selection. Universities and Colleges are invited to visit the school to allow school pupils/parents/carers the opportunity to meet with representatives of each institution and speak to myself for impartial careers advice.
- Supporting Parents Evenings – in attendance to answer pupils/parents’ queries.
- Career Information Groupwork – designed to complement S2 subject selection. Aiming to broaden career awareness, pupils are encouraged to consider learning styles, working environments, qualifications, skills and personal qualities required for different jobs in relation to their strengths, interests and aspirations.
- Individual Careers Coaching, Guidance and Management – Impartial and confidential interviews - helping pupils to identify and develop strategies and networks to enhance their skills, interest, strengths and abilities. Exploring these in relation to study and work options, in addition to increasing awareness of opportunities. Devising a Plan of Action to enable pupils to put their career ideas into a series of steps to achieve their career objectives within a given timescale.
- University Mock Interviews – this allows pupils to practice and think through what questions will be asked at interview and to receive constructive feedback. This allows the opportunity to practice and gain confidence during the mock and real interview.
