Hamilton College is celebrating with four of its pupils now accepted into Scottish Ballet, Scotland’s prestigious national dance company.

Amelie Browning (10), was the latest to take the step up, successfully auditioning for the Junior Associates programme, her progress coming a year after she won a place on the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Pre-Junior Ballet programme, where she continues to study ballet and jazz.

Amelie began ballet at her local dance school at the age of two, successfully completing a number of BATD exams and performed in the school’s annual dance shows. She also trains at the Carol McLaren Dance Academy (CMDA) in Hamilton, where she studies lyrical, contemporary, acro and ballet, and regularly performs on stage with the academy.

She joins fellow-pupils Edmund Warrilow Silcock (9), Kasim Jalil (10) and Violet Carroll (11) at Scottish Ballet.

The quartet have all been attending the Elen Brandao Dance School in Bothwell, Amelie, Kasim, and Edmund currently developing Grade I ballet, while Violet is progressing through Grade III level.

It’s a major accolade for the Lanarkshire school, which was recently shortlisted for the Independent School of the Year Award in performing arts for the first time.

“I am incredibly proud of them all for their dedication, efforts and achievements,” said dance school boss Elen Cristina Brandão van Weegen.

“They have been working hard and bring a wonderful learning attitude to every class. Their strong grasp of ballet technique, along with their focus, confidence, determination and resilience has carried them a long way.

“It was a highly selective audition process and they will now have an invaluable opportunity to further their ballet knowledge and skills.”

The pupils’ success cements close ties that Elen has with Hamilton College, her two children attending the school while her dance school has previously performed there.

Richard Charman, Hamilton College Headteacher, said: “We are thrilled to see Amelie, Edmund, Kasim and Violet achieve such an outstanding accomplishment. To have four pupils accepted into Scottish Ballet is a remarkable honour and further recognition of the strength of the performing arts at Hamilton College, recently highlighted by our finalist place in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards. Their success is a testament to their talent, commitment and perseverance, and we are immensely proud of them.”
