Sports
The College is unusually well provided with first class sports facilities including two gymnasia, a games hall, a large indoor, heated swimming pool, and rugby, football and hockey pitches. The school also has access to facilities in local sports clubs in the immediate vicinity.
Pupils are able to participate in a wide range of activities. Competitions and fixtures take place with other schools in hockey, football, rugby, cricket, netball, badminton, athletics and cross-country running. Our competitive teams regularly gain honours in regional and national events. The curriculum includes the opportunity to study Physical Education at Intermediate and Higher levels, whilst senior pupils may participate in a wider variety of leisure activities such as skiing, squash, golf tuition and weight conditioning.
BADMINTON
We have a thriving Badminton Club for S1 to S6 pupils. Training takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays after school.
We organise inter-house competitions and take part in national tournaments.
The club is co-ordinated by Mrs Dobbie, Mrs Blackstock and Mr Cunningham.
CROSS COUNTRY
There is a Junior School Team and a Senior School Team at Hamilton College.
We regularly enter all major district and national competitions throughout the season.
Hamilton College currently hold the Lanarkshire Junior Championship and have two Scottish Champions.
CRICKET
In Junior School we have a training team, whilst there are currently two senior teams of 11-a-side and 6-a-side.
Hamilton College were the Glasgow 6-a-side Champions in 2000.
Training takes place twice a week during the third term of the school year.
FOOTBALL
We currently have two teams operating in Senior School. The U18 team are the Scottish Independent Schools' Champions. They finished top of the Glasgow Independent League with six pupils also selected for Scottish School Boys Squad. The Junior School football team takes part in an annual six-a-side tournament.
GIRLS FOOTBALL
Last session was one of our best with the U17 team winning their group in the South Lanarkshire League and the U14 team winning through to the regional finals of the Coca-Cola cup at Firpark in Motherwell. There are more fixtures than ever planned for this session with the local League, Scottish Cup, U18 Independent Cup and the newly established U14 Independent Cup. Hamilton College Girls have traditionally performed well in the Coca-Cola Cup and we look forward to competing in this competition early in 2007.
HOCKEY
Currently there are teams in Junior and Senior School entering Cup and League Competitions as well as Independent Schools Fixtures.
NETBALL
We have both Senior and Junior School teams playing in local Festivals and Inter-School Competitions. Two of our Senior Teams were Scottish Championship finalists.
RUGBY
Currently 4 teams play every Saturday: J6 & J7, S1/ S2, U16 and 1st XV Teams. There are four after school training sessions and two sessions at lunchtime. Fifty Matches were played last season in Cup and Inter-School Fixtures and 16 boys gained representation honours last year.
Last year our 1st XV went on tour to Londonderry. This was our third tour and is becomming an annual event.
SWIMMING
We are the current 4 times Junior School Lanarkshire Champions.
There are both Junior School and Senior School Teams. Annual Swimming Galas take place at school for J6/7 pupils and for senior pupils. Training takes place on Mondays and Wednesday evenings.
SKIING
Regular visits to Hillend Ski Centre take place during the second term
for all pupils wishing to develop their skill level.
Ms Donaldson And Mr Shields are organising our annual visit to Midlothian Ski School for senior pupils. It involves five visits to the Midlothian Ski School in Edinburgh on the following dates:
February: 22nd and 29th March: 7th, 14th and 28th
Pupils travel by coach from the school at 4pm and return to school at 8pm. The cost will be approx £70 and this covers all tuition by qualified instructors, ski hire, lift pass, transport and extra practice time on the slopes.
The club is aimed mainly at non-skiers or skiers who would benifit from further instruction. It has always been a sucsess and and is therefore oversubscribed so sign up quickly.
GOLF
The Senior Golf Team competes in the Lanarkshire Cup and League during the Summer Term. Golfers can also gain representative honours.
GYMNASTICS
Our gymnastics club takes place on Mondays and Thursdays and is coached by a former Commonwealth gymnast.
ATHLETICS
Successful athletics teams compete annually in Lanarkshire County Sports and local Championships. Training sessions are held in the Summer Term.
INTER-HOUSE COMPETITIONS
Various competitions take place annually including Inter-House Netball, Football, Badminton, Touch Rugby and Hockey, with our Senior Sports Captains assisting with the organisation of these events.
