First & Second Year German

S1
The S1 German course provides an introduction for pupils for the majority of whom this is a completely new language. Pupils enjoy the challenge of a second foreign language and quickly progress. The course material is Logo (1) which offers pupils a lively experience, as they participate in a variety of activities across a range of topics. These include: personal information (e.g. myself, family, home area, dates and birthdays, pets), school, telling the time, food & drink, clothes, leisure.

Lessons typically incorporate elements of all language-learning skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing. Regular homework is given, both work to be learned and written exercises, and ongoing course-related assessment helps staff, pupils and parents monitor progress.

S2
The course for S2 pupils is based on Logo (2), which follows on from the S1 experience. The material consolidates and develops pupils’ language skills in a varied and lively way. Topics include: the weather, classroom language, talking about the past, telling the time, holidays, travelling by train, parts of the body, illness & healthy living, daily routine, food and drink.

Lessons typically incorporate elements of all language-learning skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing. Regular homework is given, both new language and written exercises, and ongoing course-related assessment helps staff, pupils and parents monitor progress.

We aim to encourage pupils to enjoy and meet the challenge of learning a foreign language, and of learning about another culture.
