Advanced Higher French
Topics Taught
The Advanced Higher course permits students to expand their knowledge of the French language and to learn about aspects of French culture and current affairs. In this connection, the following topics are studied:
- Problems in relationships;
- roles of men & women in marriage;
- generation gap;
- gender issues;
- changing lifestyles;
- aspects of TV & press;
- Information Technology;
- the Arts;
- education for employment;
- changing work patterns & unemployment;
- Aids;
- environmental issues – pollution / energy / conservation;
- European issues;
- life in French-speaking countries;
- immigration & racism;
- political aspects;
- genetic engineering.
In addition, students study two pieces of French literature.
Homework
Homework for Advanced Higher French often consists of preparation of sections of the book or other passages for study, completion of grammatical exercises, listening-related tasks, essay writing and reading and translation practice. Regular learning of vocabulary and grammatical structures is expected.
Assessments (Internal and External)
A pass in all four skills in Internal and in External Assessment is necessary to secure a course award at Higher Still. Details are as follows :
Internal Assessment :
Language Unit : Speaking, listening and reading.
Extended Reading and Viewing : Writing.
External Assessment :
Reading, translation, listening and writing. A Folio of writing in English on aspects studied for the Optional Unit is forwarded to the SQA as part of the final award.
Prelim examinations assess all of the above elements, with the exception of Speaking. Assessment of this skill takes place at a later date, conducted by the teacher and also by a Visiting Examiner.
Next Steps
The Advanced Higher Course in French aims to develop the independent use of language skills and facilitate the continuing study of French at university or its use in a working environment.
