Standard Grade Modern Studies
Topics taught
Students will study 4 topics for standard grade:
- Living in a Democracy – the UK
- Changing Society – the UK
- Ideology- the USA
- International Relations
Homework requirements
Pupils will normally study 2 different topics within the one week. They should expect to have at least 30 minutes of homework a week for each topic.
Assessment details (internal and external)
Pupils will sit an internal assessment at the end of most topics. They will also sit an exam in S3 that will cover all their S3 work.
Pupils will sit a prelim in January.
At the end of S4 they will normally sit General and Credit papers for their standard grade. Pupils who are struggling will sit Foundation and General papers.
Next steps
Pupils who have enjoyed Modern Studies and gained a Credit grade should then attempt to study Higher Modern Studies. If they do not do this in S5 they would be welcome to return to the subject in S6.
