Standard Grade History
Topics Taught
Students will study 3 topics for standard grade
- Scotland and Britain 1830-1930 ( coal mining, railways, the vote, health etc.)
- International Cooperation and Conflict 1890s- 1920s ( world war one)
- USA 1850-1880 ( the Wild West, slavery and the Civil War)
Homework requirements
Pupils will normally study 2 different topics within the one week. They should expect to have at least 30 minutes of homework a week for each topic.
Assessment details (internal and external)
Pupils will sit an internal assessment at the end of most topics. They will also sit an exam in S3 that will cover all their S3 work.
Pupils will sit a prelim in January.
At the end of S4 they will normally sit General and Credit papers for their standard grade. Pupils who are struggling will sit Foundation and General papers.
Next Steps
Pupils who have enjoyed history and gained a Credit grade should then attempt to study Higher History. If they do not do this in S5 they would be welcome to return to the subject in S6.
