Advanced Higher Geography

Topics Taught

There is virtually no content in the Advanced Higher Geography. The emphasis is on the development of skills and therefore Fieldwork is compulsory in S6.The prescribed skills are taught through 3 Units

Homework
The independent nature of study involved in the Advanced Higher makes real demands in the student. Approximately 5 hours work per week over and above class time will be necessary for the successful completion of the course

Assessments (Internal and External)
Only 30% of this award is examination based in a two hour paper. 70% is examined through the production of the Critical Issue and the Geographical Study which are submitted to the SQA in Mid-May. The prelim examination mirrors this as far as possible.

Next Steps
With increasing concerns world wide about the earth and its resources, Geography provides an insight into current environmental issues. It is thus a subject of great value in any career. The range of career options followed by geographers is immense; town and country planning, Travel and tourism industry, development opportunities, teaching, the civil service, military and civil surveying, journalism and many more
