Advanced Higher English

Topics Taught

Units taught at both Advanced Higher are as follows:

Pupils undergo extensive and intensive teaching in language skills, textual analysis and critical evaluation as part of the Literary Study unit. Creative Writing is taught on a workshop basis.

Homework
The amount of homework at this stage is significant in terms of the volume of reading required. Homework tasks will typically consist of reading (as part of the Specialist Study and of texts selected for class study); preparation for a piece of creative writing; textual analysis; preparation for unit tests and examinations. Pupils are also expected to become familiar with the work of features writers of quality newspapers, and to continue the habit of reading for pleasure.

Assessments (Internal and External)
At Advanced Higher level pupils are assessed according to the Arrangements documents for this course. This entails passing unit tests in the Literary Study unit and meeting a set of established procedures and practices in the Specialist Study and Creative writing units.
