Higher / Intermediate 2 Information Systems
Topics Taught
Both Higher and Intermediate 2 are made up of three internal units of assessment all 40 hours in duration.
The 3 units are;
- Using Information – how businesses use information to make them more efficient.
- Relational Databases - how to design, create and implement relational databases.
- The Internet – what it is, how it contributes to society, issues surrounding it, security measures, technical components etc.
Homework
Homework consists of approximately 3 hours per week, divided between background reading (theory only) however, practical tasks will not be issued, although pupils could use time at home to prepare for these. Approximately every fortnight a larger written piece of work will have to be submitted – this will become weekly after the October half term.
Assessments (Internal and External)
Each unit is assessed using one practical and one theoretical NAB. The assessments are one hour in length. The theory is assessed using multiple choice questions and the practical is assessed through a sample of tasks and exercises. The prelim in February takes the format of the final SQA exam in May; a 2.5 hour paper made up of 3 sections. Again grades are awarded based on SQA guidelines.
