In Design, we expect pupils to engage in problem solving issues of an aesthetic nature. A selection of design briefs offers the pupils different challenges ranging from Persuasion Graphics, package design, jewellery, product design and architecture.
In Expressive, summer projects are set in order to act as a springboard for the unit of work set throughout the year. Within the unit, pupils can explore an area of fine art in a personal way. Set tasks, specifically in drawing, are given to open up their abilities to explore the visual potentials of their motifs and themes.
In Art and Design Studies, pupils are offered a range of artists and designers to select from. Slides shows are given to contextualise these artists/designers so that they can be seen in historical content.
Homework requirements
Homework builds on previous Standard Grade approaches with continued emphasis on analytical drawing from primary sources in particular. The Design unit requires pupils to be personally responsible for investigating their chosen area set out by the brief: this will include market research. Transcriptions from artists’ works are given to enable pupils to understand techniques as well as past styles. They are often expected to annotate these for their Art and Design study unit.
Assessment details (internal and external)
The Expressive Unit and Design Unit make up a pupil’s practical folio. Both consist of 3 sections: - Investigation and Research/Development/Outcome. The Design also includes a written evaluation sheet. Art and Design Studies is a written question paper created by the S.Q.A. in a one and half hour exam.
- The Expressive activity is allocated 80 marks in total.
- The Design activity is allocated 80 marks in total.
- Art and Design studies is allocated 60 marks
Next steps
To choose Advanced Higher. A pupil can concentrate on practical work or theoretical work. Often, pupils who want to go to art school choose to do both.
