Senior School Pastoral Care

Senior School Pastoral Care

Here at Hamilton College we understand that parents wish to see their child fulfil their academic potential in a safe, happy and secure environment. Pupils who feel valued, secure and happy are able to do their best and work towards their potential.

We seek to help all children make the most of the learning opportunities available to them, support them at points of transition and encourage them to become more involved in the school community.. We work with outside organisations and have many speakers who visit and share their experience and knowledge with our pupils. Our own Personal and Social Education programme is tailored to cover those areas that are relevant to the world today, equipping children to face the challenges that await them beyond school.

Pastoral care for children within Nursery and Junior School is provided by the staff who work closest with them, in many cases their class teacher. Within the Senior School the 3 Heads of House assist pupils as they mature and move up through the school. As they explore possible careers, consider their academic progress and look to make far-reaching decisions we are there to help, encourage and guide. At all stages we encourage pupils to make informed decisions and to discuss their options with their parents. At the heart of this is a desire to foster an environment with strong, positive relationships where pupils are confident to seek assistance when necessary.

Where pupils have particular learning needs we work in partnership with parents, pupils and class teachers in order to help them overcome any barriers to learning. Support may only be needed for a specific element of the curriculum or for a short time.   At other times we work closely with pupils, parents and staff for a longer period of time. Depending on the needs of the pupils, assistance can be given through individual tuition, small group teaching or in a cooperative teaching capacity when we work in the classrooms alongside the class teachers. In addition to school staff, we liaise closely with specialist services such as orthoptists and educational psychologists. Where necessary we also consult with experts in speech and language therapy and occupational therapy.

The best support for our pupils involves all three parties, pupils, parents and staff, working together.
