Notes on Senior School Uniform
1. POLICY ON SCHOOLBAGS
For J4 – S6: EITHER a traditional black briefcase/pilot’s case plus Hamilton College Games Bag (maroon bags or new navy bags available from August).
OR
a Hamilton College backpack plus Hamilton College Games Bag. (maroon bags or new navy bags available from August).
We do not allow satchels (either leather or fabric), nor will we allow fashion or shoulder bags of any sort, sports bags or non-Hamilton College rucksacks.
As an alternative to a traditional briefcase, we now offer pupils from J4-S6 the option of a sturdy and specially designed “Chiropack” backpack, advertised as being endorsed by the World Federation of Chiropractic. This is in direct response to earlier concerns expressed by parents about the weight of books which pupils carry around. Our backpack is supplied in maroon, with a small Hamilton College logo (in blue).
2. GIRLS : KILTS
All Senior girls wear the Lindsay kilt with plain tie or sports tie, if awarded, and black tights.
3. BLOUSES
Must be traditional shirts with either long or short sleeves. Fashion blouses with soft collars, three-quarter sleeves and a fitted style are not suitable. These blouses do not tuck in properly to the waistband of the kilt, and the collar is not neat with a tie.
4. TROUSERS
Boys in S5 and S6 (including prefects) are allowed to wear black trousers. However, these must be of traditional, plain design, flannel or polyester (not cotton) and without turn-ups or flares. They are readily available through retailers such as Alstons, Marks and Spencer or Slater’s.
Boys in S1-S4 continue to wear mid-grey trousers.
All boys in S1 – S6 continue to wear the existing striped tie (or sports tie, if awarded).
5. OUTERWEAR
In uniform supplies, we sell lined navy blue cagoules in showerproof material which are more substantial than previous designs. These are the only officially approved outer garments, and parents are asked to co-operate in ensuring that other jackets are not worn with school uniform.
6. SCARVES
Pupils may choose to wear:
EITHER a Lindsay tartan woollen scarf (available from the uniform department)
OR a plain black woollen or fleece scarf (not in chenille and with no pattern).
7. GLOVES
In the winter uniform period, pupils may wear plain black woollen gloves.
8. FOOTWEAR
Footwear – shoes should be plain leather. Buckles or other decoration, patent leather/suede or boots/trainers are NOT ACCEPTABLE. Heels should be of a sensible height to ensure safety, as pupils move about the school a lot each day, up and down stairs. To minimise the risk of accidents or injury, shoes which are too high for safety or comfort should not be worn to school. Trainers, or trainer-style shoes are not acceptable for boys or girls.
9. JEWELLERY
No jewellery is permitted, except a watch. Sleeper earrings are not permitted. If ears have been recently pierced, sleepers must still be removed in school. Pupils have often told us that they thought they are allowed to cover earrings or sleepers with plasters when in school. They are not permitted to do so. The rule is quite clear: no sleepers, no earrings, no plasters.
10. MAKE-UP
S1-S4 Only subtle use of foundation/concealer is acceptable. No eye make-up or lip colour/gloss is permitted.
S5-S6 Pupils may wear subtle make-up but if any make-up is too obvious, then S5 and S6 will be required to conform to the same rules as S1-S4.
Any pupil wearing make-up which contravenes these guidelines will be sent to Guidance Staff who will provide the necessary means to remove unacceptable make-up.
11. NAIL POLISH
No coloured nail polish permitted – only clear allowed. It is taken as read that no nail transfers/decorations are permittted.
12. HAIR COLOUR
No unnatural colours are permitted, only natural shades. The aim is to avoid unfavourable attention being drawn to someone’s hair, and so we insist that if hair is being coloured, it is within the range of natural hair colours. Any roots that grow in should be dealt with so that it is not obvious that the hair has been coloured artificially. Within the definition, pupils will not be able to argue that they can have dark hair with blond tips since there is no way that this could be deemed as natural coloration of hair.
NOTE: White peroxide blond would not come into the category of natural shading.
13. HAIR ACCESSORIES
Hair clasps/bands should be unobtrusive, functional and conform to the colours of the uniform i.e. any shade of blue or burgundy. Black or brown would also be acceptable. (Hair accessories should be appropriate to school and not as would be worn to a party.)
Braiding of the type adopted on holiday is not acceptable. (A single plait or two plaits would not be classified as braiding.) Hair extensions should not be of a different colour.
14. HAIRSTYLES
All hairstyles need to be neat and tidy. Extreme hairstyles and unnatural colour are not permitted. Boys should wear their hair off the collar, and they should avoid using excessive amounts of hair gel. Hair must not be closely cropped .
In the event of a dispute about an individual hairstyle, the school management decision is final.
15. FACIAL HAIR
Boys should be clean-shaven.
16. LABELLING OF PROPERTY
We remind you that ALL items of uniform and PE clothing MUST have the pupil’s name on them. This should be done in time for the new session in August, and staff will carry out random checks. The amount of unclaimed and unidentified lost property concerns us, as it represents a considerable amount of money.
17. CONDITION OF UNIFORM
Uniform should be clean, in good repair and smartly worn. Details matter – e.g. shirt collar buttons should be fastened and ties knotted tightly. Shirts must be tucked in.
We appreciate the support of parents in maintaining the high standards of our pupils’ uniform and appearance.
