Notes On Junior School Uniform

1. Policy on Schoolbags

For J4 – S6: EITHER a traditional black briefcase/pilot’s case plus Hamilton College Games Bag OR a Hamilton College backpack plus Hamilton College Games Bag. (Maroon or new navy bags
available from August.
For J1 – J3: a Hamilton College schoolbag in school colours with straps.

We do not allow satchels (either leather or fabric), nor will we allow fashion or shoulder bags of any sort, sports bags or non-Hamilton College rucksacks.
As an alternative to a traditional briefcase, we now offer pupils from J4-S6 the option of a sturdy and specially designed “Chiropack” backpack, advertised as being endorsed by the World Federation of Chiropractic. This is in direct response to concerns of parents about the weight of books which pupils carry around. Our backpack is supplied in maroon, with a small Hamilton College logo (in blue).

2. GIRLS : KILTS

All Senior girls wear the Lindsay kilt with plain tie and black tights. Girls in J6 & J7 are allowed to wear the Lindsay kilt instead of the pinafore or summer dress. They also wear a plain maroon tie, and according to the weather, long or short sleeved blue uniform shirts, black tights or white top hose or socks.

All other Junior girls continue with the existing winter and summer uniform, according to the arrangements published in the prospectus and homework diary.

3. NEW ITEM AVAILABLE IN 2006/2007

Over the next session we are replacing the maroon pinafores. From August 2006, all new girls in J1–J5 will wear a Lindsay tartan pinafore. Girls in J6 and J7 wear a Lindsay tartan skirt. Existing pupils may continue with their present uniform or move over to the new pinafore/skirt.

4. BOYS : TROUSERS

Boys in both J6 and J7 may wear long trousers throughout the year. Arrangements for boys in J1 – J5 remain the same as they are: i.e. they wear short trousers in the summer uniform period and long trousers in the winter period.

5. HATS AND CAPS

Only J1 – J3 pupils wear hats and caps.

6. SMOCKS

Only J1 pupils are required to wear a blue smock.

7. OUTERWEAR

In uniform supplies, we sell lined navy blue cagoules in showerproof material. These are the only officially approved outer garments, and parents are asked to co-operate in ensuring that other jackets are not worn with school uniform.

8. SCARVES

Pupils may choose to wear: EITHER a Lindsay tartan woollen scarf (available from the uniform department)
OR a plain black woollen or fleece scarf (but not a fashion scarf – no pattern).

9. GLOVES

In the winter uniform period, pupils may wear plain black woollen gloves. (Again, no fashion items, please)

10. SHOES

Footwear – shoes should be plain leather. Buckles or other decoration, patent leather/suede or boots/trainers are NOT ACCEPTABLE. Heels should be of a sensible height to ensure safety, as pupils move about the school a lot each day, up and down stairs. To minimise the risk of accidents or injury, shoes which are too high for safety or comfort should not be worn to school. Trainers or trainer style shoes are not acceptable for boys or girls.

11. JEWELLERY

No jewellery is permitted, except a watch. Sleeper earrings are not permitted. If ears have been recently pierced, sleepers must still be removed in school. Pupils have often told us that they thought they are allowed to cover earrings or sleepers with plasters when in school. They are not permitted to do so. The rule is quite clear: no sleepers, no earrings, no plasters.

12. MAKE-UP AND NAIL VARNISH

Make-up is not permitted in the Junior School. No nail varnish is permitted. It is taken as read that no nail transfers/decorations are permitted.

13. HAIR ACCESSORIES

Hair clasps/bands should be unobtrusive, functional and conform to the colours of the uniform i.e. any shade of blue or burgundy. Black or brown would also be acceptable. (Hair accessories should be appropriate to school and not as would be worn to a party.)

Braiding of the type adopted on holiday is not acceptable. (A single plait or two plaits would not be classified as braiding.)

14. HAIRSTYLES

All hairstyles need to be neat and tidy and such as not to cause comment. Hairstyles must not be extreme in cut, style or artificial colour. This applies to all pupils. Boys should wear their hair off the collar, and they should avoid using excessive amounts of hair gel. Hair must not be closely cropped.

In the event of a dispute about an individual hairstyle, the school management decision is final.

15. LABELLING OF PROPERTY

We remind you that ALL items of uniform and PE clothing MUST have the pupil’s name on them. This should be done in time for the new session in August, and staff may carry out random checks. The amount of unclaimed and unidentified lost property concerns us, as it represents a considerable amount of money.

16. CONDITION OF UNIFORM

Uniform should be clean, in good repair and smartly worn. Details matter – e.g. shirt collar buttons should be fastened and ties knotted tightly. Shirts must be tucked in.

17. SUMMER UNIFORM

Summer uniform is OPTIONAL after the Easter break and until the second May Holiday Weekend. It is COMPULSORY for the remainder of the Summer Term and the beginning of the Autumn Term until the September Weekend. It is again OPTIONAL until the October Week.

We appreciate the support of parents in maintaining the high standards of our pupils’ uniform and appearance.
