School Discipline
Introduction
We aim to produce pupils with high standards of behaviour.
We aim to provide a conducive learning environment where pupils can work without disruption from others.
We aim to meet the expectations of parents for whom good discipline is a key factor in choosing this school.
Our Christian ethos places value in respect for others. We want the relationship between staff pupils and parents to be a good one.
Therefore our behaviour code states that we should respect each other and treat others in the way we would like to be treated.
Our pupils are expected to:
- Accept each other's differences
- Behave in a non-aggressive and non-provocative way.
- Be polite and use language which is non-offensive.
- Work conscientiously.
- Allow others to work without disruption.
- Respect the School environment.
- Be responsible and helpful at all times.
Regulations
Action will be taken against pupils who:
- Damage property or premises.
- Bully physically, verbally or by exclusion.
- Steal, lie or cheat.
- Are insolent to staff.
- Use offensive or blasphemous language.
- Deliberately disregard instructions.
- Smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs while in school.
- Behave in a dangerous manner.
- Behave badly on a school bus.
- Leave school without permission.
- Behave badly whilst on a school trip.
- Eat or drink in a public area of the school.
- Chew gum in school.
- Drop litter deliberately.
- Take part in an activity which undermines the school’s reputation and Christian foundation.
Sanctions
We are developing a system which will reward positive behaviour as well as punishing negative behaviour.
Breaches of discipline will be addressed by the following escalating range of sanctions:
- Informal discussion.
- Verbal warning.
- Punishment exercise.
- Detention.
- Withdrawal of privileges.
- Referral to senior member of staff.
Parents will be brought into the discussions when a pupil receives 3 punishment exercises or is referred to a member of school management.
Persistent or severe offences will result in suspension or exclusion from the school.
Homework
We want to address the issue of uncompleted homework separately from general indiscipline.
Making no attempt to hand in homework will result in a homework exercise being issued.
Pupils will not be given such an exercise if parents have written a letter of explanation or the pupil has experienced genuine difficulty in coping with or understanding the work.
Parents are asked to work in partnership with us to monitor the quality of their child’s homework.
Further, parents will be contacted when a pupil has failed to hand in work on 3 occasions.
If the problem persists the further intervention of the parents will be sought as well as a sanction such as detention being applied.
Ultimately we would place the onus for addressing the non-completion of homework on parents and would seek an agreement as to how best to resolve the problem.
